Ten years on, Sayers set to discover if she will be given Olympic bronze

One of the longest-running sagas in the Russian doping scandal will reach its conclusion as Mariya Abakumova's case is heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. For Sayers, a ten-times national javelin champion, it will be "embarrassing" if CAS rules in the Russian's favour. Sayers, who retired last year, also called on the IAAF, athletics' governing body, to maintain its ban on Russia and said all athletes should be tested every month. She said that all the sport's big players, including global companies like Nike and Adidas, should pay for more tests. "Anyone benefiting from athletics should invest in testing," she said. "I don't see any change at all with Russia. The IAAF has done the right thing in keeping them out because cheating is cultural and that means it's going to take years to change. Russia sees the odd positive test from other nations and assumes everyone is cheating and so it's okay. They have to stay banned." Abakumova won the silver medal in Beijing. In May 2016 the Russian news agency, TASS, reported that she was one of 14 Russians to have failed retrospective re-tests of urine samples from the 2008 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee stripped her of her medal that September, but she launched a protracted legal appeal. If she loses that then she will be ordered to return her silver medal to the IOC. That will be given to Christina Obergfoll who, in turn, will return her bronze medal which will be passed to Sayers.
